Steve Potter — Principal & Lead Calibration Engineer

Steve Potter has spent more than twenty years managing and operating precision calibration services — and personally doing the engineering they're built on. He is the founder and operator of E-tunez, a Canadian remote-calibration practice for high-precision electronic engine-management platforms that has delivered thousands of individual calibrations: characterizing each installation, developing its fuel, ignition and thermal-compensation tables, validating every revision against logged data, and documenting every change in plain language for the person who owns the machine.

The practice was forged in one of the harshest calibration environments in North America. Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, E-tunez calibrates across an annual operating swing from roughly +38 °C to −40 °C — conditions that expose exactly the compensation behaviour most validation programs never see. Intake-air and coolant-temperature compensation strategies that look flawless on a test stand fall apart at the extremes: factory instrumentation commonly bottoms out at −30 °C and simply cannot read colder. Steve's team has calibrated and verified equipment operating at −44 °C in Thompson, Manitoba — the same region a major global OEM chose for its extreme-cold-weather testing facility. When your calibration has to hold from a prairie deep-freeze to a summer heat wave, "close enough" is not a compensation strategy. That thermal discipline — calibrating the machine to the environment it actually lives in — is the founding DNA of Thermal Synergy.

Steve has worked alongside calibration-platform developers since their products launched — in some cases before — and every calibrator in his practice operates the same class of equipment they calibrate. Alongside the engineering practice, he teaches at a major Canadian post-secondary institution, where the standard is the same one he holds for client work: if you can't explain the system clearly enough for someone else to reason about it, you don't understand it well enough to calibrate it.

The operating philosophy

Twenty years of calibration work distilled into the principles Thermal Synergy runs on:

  • "Trust us" isn't good enough. You deserve to know exactly what is loaded into your controller and how every value was selected. Accountability is an engineering deliverable, not a slogan.
  • No black boxes, no locked calibrations. Every revision ships with plain-language notes describing what changed and why. Our techniques are shared openly — real calibration isn't copy-and-paste, it's in the details, and the details change with the environment.
  • The data decides. Every calibration decision traces to logged evidence across varied operating conditions — not to assumptions, and not to how the last machine behaved.
  • The details in between. Anyone can make a machine perform at full load on a mild day. Quality lives in everything in between — part load, transients, cold starts, the worst week of winter.
  • Follow-through. Fast revisions, complete answers, and standing behind the work down the road. A calibration is a relationship with a machine, not a file transfer.
  • Free help is good business. Data review, diagnosis and honest advice cost us time and earn something better than revenue: clients who understand their own machines.

From engines to industry

The physics never changed — only the scale. Stoichiometric air-fuel ratios, fuel-quality characterization, temperature compensation, knock margin, closed-loop feedback trim: the discipline built calibrating high-precision engine-management systems in an extreme climate transfers directly to gas turbines, industrial engines, boilers and process combustion. Thermal Synergy exists to point that discipline — measure the fuel, measure the air, model the burn, write the code, verify with data — at industrial machines, where a single point of efficiency is worth more than most complete overhauls.

Why the cold matters to your plant

A calibrator who has verified equipment at −44 °C doesn't treat ambient-correction curves as a formality. Air density, sensor validity limits, thermal compensation, cold-start behaviour — these are exactly the site-specific variables that decide whether an industrial machine in a real climate delivers its nameplate or quietly gives performance away. We learned them where they are hardest to ignore.
